While the ruling class mourns the death of one of their most loyal politicians and mouthpieces, the British and Irish working classes and oppressed peoples the world over are certainly not mourning Margaret Thatcher’s passing.
The government of the United Kingdom will soon pay several million pounds to 16 former Guantanamo Bay detainees in an out-of-court settlement. The British government agreed to settle due to concerns that continuing the court cases would risk revealing classified information and would tarnish the Crown's image both at home and abroad.
Just before the major imperialist countries met in Toronto for the G20 summit in late June, both Britain and Germany announced austerity measures to balance budgets and cut their respective debts. The measures include cutbacks in public services, pay cuts, wage freezes and across-the-board tax increases.
