On Sun. April 26, the Ecuadorian people once again chose Rafael Correa to the presidency of the republic among the eight presidential candidates. Rafael Correa won with 51 percent of the votes. With this he breaks the cycle of 10 years of uncompleted presidential terms.
On Sept. 28, Ecuadorans approved a new, progressive constitution with 65 percent support. Even in districts where the right-wing opposition was strong, the majority of people voted in favor of the constitution.
On July 8, the Ecuadoran government took over 200 businesses, including several major television stations, on the grounds of corruption. All of the companies are associated with the Isaías Group, which owes the state and people of Ecuador $661 million due to the collapse of the Filanbanco bank in the 1990s.
