Connecticut activists fight for transgender equality

In brief

April 22, 2011

Equality rights advocates in Connecticut have been fighting to make this the year in which “gender identity and gender expression” are added to the state’s anti-discrimination law. A public hearing was held on March 21 at which family, friends and members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community spoke in favor of House Bill 6599.

Nicole Greenlaw testified about anti-trans discrimination: “We have been labeled as crazy, disturbed, delusional and I've been personally referred to as an abomination. ... We are none of those words. We are just who we are.”

HB 6599 was passed by the Conn. Judiciary Committee on April 5. The bill will now go before the state legislators.

According to ctEQUALITY, 13 states, Washington, D.C., and over 130 municipalities currently have laws that prohibit discrimination on the basis of gender identity or gender expression.

The Party for Socialism and Liberation fights anti-LGBT bigotry, which is another tool of the ruling class to keep workers divided.
