We call on all progressive people to defend same- sex marriage rights as steps towards tearing down the walls of bigotry and discrimination that divide us. The lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community has fought long and hard against backward social norms; these victories truly came through decades of struggle. Billionaire Mayor Mike Bloomberg, who clearly thinks he can pay his way into a third term, likes to pretend to be a friend of the LGBT community. After securing the nomination of the Republican party, which staunchly opposes gay marriage, he turned around and proclaimed his support for the LGBT community’s civil rights struggle. But Bloomberg is the largest single contributor to the Senate Republicans, the main group now standing in the way of same-sex marriage legislation! For the billionaire King of New York, same-sex marriage is just like any other “issue”: one that can be bought and sold depending on his campaign needs. Frances Villar, on the other hand, is a working- class mother from the Bronx. She is an activist with on-the-ground experience fighting for tenant rights, education rights and against the war. She is a member of the Party for Socialism and Liberation (PSL), which actively organized for the mass mobilizations against Prop 8 in Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York, and elsewhere. The fact that the California Supreme Court sided with the bigots on Proposition 8 means that the LGBT community and its supporters must remain in the streets demanding full equality. This is where you will find the VotePSL Frances Villar for Mayor campaign -- in the streets, fighting for justice. The PSL’s Frances Villar for Mayor campaign is about putting the people first—LGBT and straight, Black, Latino and white—in front of the billionaires who run the system for their own profit. Join us to build a real movement for jobs, education and equality, not the capitalist system of poverty, racism and war.
