Can We End the Wars? Vietnam's lessons for today
Friday, March 12 at 7:00 pm
Justice Center 617 Florida Avenue NW Metro to Shaw-Howard University
After
decades of death, destruction and untold human suffering, the U.S. war
on Vietnam was finally brought to an end due to a combination of three
primary factors: the U.S. anti-war movement, G.I. resistance and, most
importantly, the heroic struggle of the Vietnamese people against
colonialism.
Please join us for a special forum with
featured speaker Bill Hackwell, a Vietnam war veteran and anti-war
organizer in San Francisco. BIll is also a founding member of March Forward!, an organization of veterans and active duty soldiers organizing against war and racism.
Bill
was a Staff Sergeant (SSGT) in the U.S. Air Force. He served as a
combat photographer in Vietnam. Ultimately, while in Vietnam, Bill
turned his camera to portray the plight of the Vietnamese people living
under war and occupation. This was the beginning of his career in
social documentary photography that has since focused on movements and
communities, and their struggles against injustice and exploitation.
Bill's
experience in the U.S. Air Force during the war in Vietnam changed his
world view forever. After returning home he chose to dedicate his life
to the anti-war movement, taking the side of the oppressed people of
the world.
Please join us for a discussion on how the lessons of
the Vietnam War are still relevant today and how we can contribute to
ending the ongoing wars in Iraq, Afghanistan and everywhere.
