Hundreds of thousands rally in Mexico City

Keeping the struggle in the streets

Over 200,000 people rallied in Mexico City’s zócalo on July 1 to voice opposition to the government of President Felipe

Calderón and to support Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

"Zero negotiation. I repeat, zero negotiation with those who carry out policies against the people," said López Obrador. He said he will mobilize the masses should Calderón attempt to privatize the oil industry or open it to foreign investment.

Calderón won the July 2006 elections with U.S. backing by a razor-thin margin amid mounds of evidence of violations. Popular among poor Mexicans, the moderate Obrador shifted slightly to the left in the aftermath of the elections, calling for taking the struggle to the streets and holding rallies with as many as 2.5 million people.
