In the June 3, 2008 election, Cabral finished second out of three candidates in her race against right-wing incumbent Don Knabe. Cabral won 23,703 votes—about 18 percent—in the 4th District with a campaign that focused on fighting racist police brutality. The 4th District includes Long Beach, Cerritos, Whittier, San Pedro and many other communities. Marylou is a student at California State University Long Beach. She was the principal organizer of one of the largest CSULB campus protests against the Iraq war in 2007. As a volunteer organizer with the ANSWER Coalition (Act Now to Stop War and End Racism), she traveled to Washington, D.C., on Sept. 15, 2007, and spoke to 100,000 people at an anti-war protest in front of the White House. Marylou has promoted the immigrant rights cause for years, first as a child in Orange County where she worked in a club representing Mexicans from the state of Zacatecas living in the United States. In recent years, Marylou has become a leading immigrant rights organizer in Los Angeles County, rallying tens of thousands at pro-immigrant marches in 2006 and 2007. She is adamantly against the corporate owners, ruling-class politicians and the racism, sexism, anti-LGBT bigotry and exploitation they promote. Marylou struggles to build class unity in everything she does. Direct link to this page: www.pslweb.org/marylou
