Black August originated in California's prisons in the early 1970s to acknowledge the political and militant struggles of politicized Black prisoners, and those who were martyred in the process of fighting the prison system. This commemorative month serves to pay tribute to the past and the present forces of the Black liberation movement in the United States, and beyond its borders. Black August affirms the necessity for political struggle and a commitment to the emancipation of all those who are oppressed!

Celebrate this Black August by joining the Party for Socialism and Liberation to hear from our special guest speaker Aaron Dixon, former Captain of the Seattle chapter of the Black Panther Party, on the ongoing struggle of political prisoners for freedom, as well as the role of state repression in the history of the Black struggle in this country.

There will also be a presentation on the origins and demands of the nationwide prison strike (August 21st to September 9th) and on mass incarceration from a socialist perspective. Presentations will be followed by discussion.

The Revolutionary Organizing Center is a wheel-chair accessible space and has gender-neutral restrooms.

Light snacks and beverages will be provided.
