A home is a basic necessity. Yet, this basic necessity is functionally denied to millions of people around the world. Here in Boston, our housing crisis is felt in neighborhoods across the city. At least 6,000 Boston residents experienced homelessness last year, partially because of how shamefully little actually affordable housing exists in our city. One-fifth of our city’s residents spend at least half of their monthly income on rent. The waiting lists for public housing and section 8 have reached over 40,000 people. And in the face of this crisis, Boston keeps building more unaffordable luxury housing than ever.

Why? Because in a capitalist society, the basic necessities of the general population are not guaranteed. The right to profit is protected. The right to housing, health care, food, and work is not.

Join the Party for Socialism and Liberation as we gather a community space to discuss how the housing crisis is actually a permanent feature of capitalism, and what we can do to fight for our communities and guarantee housing for all. We will be using the newest edition of our publication, Breaking the Chains: A Socialist Perspective on Women’s Liberation, to guide our discussion. This edition provides a socialist analysis of the housing crisis and offers alternative societal approaches to housing.
