LA: Our Vision for a New World

July 01, 2017 at 7:30pm - 9pm

The people have proven resilient in the ongoing fight to beat back Trump's racist agenda, including the defeat of the racist Muslim ban and growing resistance to ICE raids. We marched for environmental justice as our president continues to deny climate change is real. We mobilized for an end to military aggression by reviving the anti-war movement during the attacks on Syria. All of these fight-backs were not without immense struggle, loss of human life, families being torn apart, and further strain on daily life under capitalism.

People are still left with little to no access to decent jobs almost a full decade after the 2008 financial crisis. In 2014, the official unemployment rate was close to 8%. That rate is nearly double for Native Americans and African Americans. Our water, the air we breathe, and our environment faces irreversible damage as corporations continue to abuse our planet and extract its resources only to make the rich richer. Our basic rights to education are threatened by widespread privatization under Betsy DeVos. Black children are seven times more likely to attend schools that are considered high-poverty than white children, yet nothing is being done to address these disparities. Over 20 million people in the U.S. are facing the threat of being thrown off health insurance by the U.S. Congress, which is a death sentence for many. The foreclosure crisis continues unabated with thousands of evictions taking place each year. Nationally, over half of our population is considered rent-burdened - meaning paying more than 30% of our income toward housing while developers reap profits from redeveloping cities and displacing residents. The dismal housing is absurd as there are more than enough empty homes to house our homeless. We're living under a full blown war on working people carried out by the richest capitalists in human history.

This war on working and poor people, known as 'austerity', is not just worsening in the U.S. In fact, the Grenfell Tower housing block fire in London that killed hundreds of poor residents was proof that those in power have no qualms with neglecting and destroying poor people's lives for the sake of their bank accounts. This fire and the countless crises facing working people in the U.S., U.K., and beyond are proof that the capitalist system is a total failure at meeting the needs of humanity. This failed system however is not permanent and we can and will fight for a new world. Join the Party for Socialism and Liberation as we share this vision for a new society built on human solidarity and our ability to meet the needs of all people instead of the few.
