The French ruling class is being shaken to the core and the huge people’s struggle has just begun. It began with the now familiar Yellow Vests movement, a militant street rebellion against intolerable economic conditions of poverty as the super-rich flaunt their wealth stolen from the workers. With each day, the movement is rapidly deepening, sweeping across France, with mass popular sectors, high-school, university, working and unemployed youth, postal, port, firefighters, transportation and other unionists, and more, joining in.

Organizers have come up with a list of demands addressing a broad range of issues from housing to environmental protections and taxes. As per these demands, the French parliament is set to raise the minimum wage and pass tax cuts for working class people. The cases of Cyntoia Brown and Jazmine Headley have gained nationwide attention in the past week. Though both situations differ in many ways, each highlight the important connections between women's oppression and the prison industrial complex. Over the last few decades, the number of incarcerated women in the US has grown at twice the rate of men. A quarter of women locked up have yet to see a trial. Black women and lesbian and bisexual women are more likely to be incarcerated and tend to serve longer sentences than women of other races and straight women.
