The Fight Against Patriarchy
The #MeToo campaign has inspired many to share their experiences and shed light on a myriad of symptoms of oppression from assault and sexual violence to unequal pay to attacks on our bodily autonomy. One out of 6 women in the United States has been a victim of rape in her lifetime. Twenty-one percent of transgender, genderqueer or nonconforming college students have been sexually assaulted. These are manifestations of patriarchy deeply intertwined with the social and political capitalist power structures. The Trump administration has waged war on women and LGBTQ people through the gutting of essential health care and social services critical to keeping people of oppressed genders safe.
History has shown us that building solidarity and healing through collective strength is a necessity in creating a better system, a socialist system. Come hear from organizers of the Smashing Patriarchy Building and Healing workshop as we continue to discuss the ongoing fight against patriarchy and capitalism.
2017: A Historic Year in Review and the Way Forward
Beginning with Trump's inauguration back in January, a wave of resistance in the women's liberation fight, immigrants rights movement, anti war struggle and more has continued in the streets. Though the movement in the streets has hit its ebbs and flows, grassroots organizers here and across the country continue to defend our communities and build a united movement for a better system, like the several hundred organizers who convened at the Peoples Congress in September. Around the globe, US imperialism reared its ugly head in Syria, Venezuela, the Korean Peninsula and beyond. With the US global influence on the decline under the Trump and working class and oppressed people facing continued attacks by both political parties, what is the way forward in confronting this oppressive capitalist and imperialist system? Join us in an overview of the past year and a discussion on the way forward in 2018.
